Alva 'Billy' Bodden understood the importance and value of the land and sea, he worked both from a tender age to support his family. At the age of 14, the eldest child of his family, he left school and was gainfully employed in Grand Cayman with his Uncle taking Tourist on a small motor boat. Using his wages to assist his mother & younger siblings, all of whom still resided in Little Cayman. In 1954, just shy of his 16th birthday, opportunity presented itself for him to sail with the National Bulk Carriers, he embark on his worldwide travels as an international seaman for 3 years, then returned home in July 1957. He returned to Sea in 1960 and travelled throughout the Caribbean, North America, Latin America, the Middle and Far East, Europe returning home to Cayman Brac in 1970. During his time he along with other seamen build the economy of Cayman Brac.
He was a true son of the soil and pillar of our community. He was a founding member of the Cayman Brac Lions Club and received the Governors Badge of Honour for his contribution to Tourism in the Cayman Islands at the Queen's Birthday celebration in 2006. He was also a man of the people and dedicated his time and effort to the development of the Cayman Islands by serving as a member of the Environmental Board, Caymanian Protection Board, The Water Authority Board and the Development Board of the Sister Islands, to name just a few. He touched many lives as he supported a variety of charitable causes, sporting and community functions and other civic events. In 2013, he was awarded the Cayman National Cultural Foundation Heritage Cross for 'his service to the Sister Islands as a member of various boards responsible for the island's cultural heritage and the shaping of their emerging cultural expressions'. His pride and commitment to the growth and development of his country was always evident.
