Introduction:
We nominate the above person for the above indicated category of "Early Pioneer" for the following reasons, which are included in a brief overview of his career at sea.
Ira Elnathan Bothwell started his career on the sea at the age of 16 in 1934 and dedicated 33-34 years of his life as a seaman. During his years at sea, he sailed on many different types of ships, such as Turtle Schooners, Oil Tankers and Cargo ships. The names of some of the ships he sailed on included:
' The Adams, a Turtle Schooner that sailed between the Miskito Cays, Nicaragua, Key West and Grand Cayman.
' The Rio Sacramento a ship that delivered crude oil between California- Bay Area to Japan, Sumatra and Manila.
' The Klagro, a cargo ship that sailed in Europe, Asia and North Africa.
' The Addie H
' Omoah
' Cimboco
' Lady Slater- which was the largest motor vessel ever built in the Cayman Islands
' Mizpah
' Merco
During Mr. Bothwell's time at sea, he sailed to many ports within North America, South America, Asia, North Africa and the Caribbean. He progressed his career at sea and held a variety of positions and retired from sea as a Second Engineer.
After a career at sea of 33 years, he retired from the sea and returned home, where he worked in various positions including farming, construction and also with the local Power Company.
Mr. Bothwell dedicated more than half of his life at sea and was part of a generation that put Cayman on the map for being some of the best seamen. Through his dedication and sacrifice, he was able to sail the world, support his family and ultimately contribute to the development of the Cayman Islands Economy.
