I would like to take this opportunity to nominate my brother Hurley C. Hydes who spent his entire adult life as a seaman. Hurley left the Cayman Islands as a teenager for the United States as did most young men his age. Hurley began his career in the early 1940's working on various US registered ships, he moved through the ranks quite successfully reaching the ranks of Chief Engineer. In the 1970's he became the Port Engineer for Astro Marine which was a US based company doing exploratory and crude oil extraction in Brazil. During his time in Brazil, Hurley had several Caymanian seaman working along with him. He subsequently returned to the US after 10 years in Brazil and worked for Marcona Ocean Ltd. this company operated an sand mining business on Ocean Key Bahamas transporting sand back to the US to be used in the glass making industry, Hurley worked for Marcona until he retired in 1990.
