Bio
Introduction:
I am nominating Hewett Jim Jim McLean as he served his country for over 40 years as an ambassador and role model while at Sea. He started his seafaring career on the National Bulk Career and took care of his mother and 3 sisters financially at a tender age of 17 years old - it was a huge sacrifice but to provide for his family he did that with pride and he never took that responsibility lightly. He sometimes was away at sea for 18-24 months at a time. He also sailed on the Pyramid Venus where he led his crew like a gentle giant. Jim was determined to make a lasting impression on his fellow seaman and with that began teaching many of them navigation and how to read weather even when at times equipment failed them. He earn his Mate license and ended his career on an American ship in 1987 as a Captain. He was honored and commended for rescuing 9 Cubans that were drifting at sea and was honored by a letter from the Captain at the time for being a humanitarian in the early 1970's.
