Bio

Introduction:
I would like to nominate my father Hennburgh Dixon for his 29 year of service as a Pump man. Mr. Dixon sail from 1952 to 1981 on the following ships; National Bulk Carrier, M.B Transmere, M.B. Transpan, S.S. Petrol, S.S Jimpet, S.S Universe Commander, S.S Common Wealth, S.S Cabala, Universe Island and M.B Lea Maris. In 1963 while sailing on the. S.S. Common Wealth off the coast of Africa, the ship caught fire, being the caring selfless person that he is, he risked his life by going into the pump room of the ship to disconnect the necessary gages, and was hailed a hero when he saved the ship and crew. Now 90 years old and despite being terminally ill with Cancer he continues to share his stories of his sailing days to friends and family. Henburgh Dixon is one of the eldest remaining seamen in the Cayman Islands as well as the eldest on Cayman Brac. Mr.Dixon provided an astonishing 29 years of excellent service as a seaman only falling short of 30 years by a matter of weeks. One of the primary companies Mr. Dixon worked for was the 'National Bulk Carrier', working on numerous vessels for the company where he started as a deckhand and later became a pumpman. Mr. Dixon is also one of the few remaining persons to own, and until only a few years ago, still fished from the iconic Cayman Black & Blue Catboat. Always opting to row, "the good ole' fashion way" rather than using a marine engine. I nominate my Grand Father Mr.Dixon as he was a loyal pump man for the National Bulk carriers in the late 1950's and 1960's. He has told me stories about how he saved a ship from sinking as the engine room was caught on fire and he saved everyone on board and the cargo. My grand father is very proud of the amount of hard work he has put into working at sea and sacrificed being away from his wife and children who missed and loved him dearly.Henburgh Dixon is one of the eldest remaining seamen in the Cayman Islands as well as the eldest on Cayman Brac. Worked hard for his country and his wife and children. Sacrificed his time to be a good father and husband. My grandfather visited Grand Cayman the other day for a medical appointment so I took this as a opportunity to visit. He told me a new story in short, he was working in the engine room on a lower deck and was struck by a falling hammer and was diagnosed with a fractured skull. Even though he was injured he continued to work until his injuries were to much to handle under those sercomstances. I personally believe only a man with a true love for the sea and his family would endure such pain and still work as hard as he did. He will always and forever be my hero.
