I nominate this person in the EXCELLED AT SEA category for his achievement in rank and for crossing boundaries to Port Engineer and Shipping Engineer.
GILBERT CARDIFF CHISHOLM
Went to Sea at age 20yrs
He started out at Sea in 1955 as a wiper, the lowest rating in the Engine Room. Excelled up through the ranks from wiper, oiler, jr engineer, 3rd engineer, 2nd engineer, 1st assistant engineer to chief engineer, the highest rating on the ship.
He finally stopped sailing on the ships as Chief Engineer and continued full time in N.B.C.'s office when he was not out visiting ships as a Port Engineer, which is the person who travels to the different ports in the U.S. that the ships arrive at and inspects the Engine room and attend to any needs of the present Chief Engineer.
He retired in February 2001 and resided at his home in New York until his death on July 14, 2004.
Whenever I went to New York to join a ship for National Bulk Carriers I stayed at his home instead of Ms. Solomon's who took care of all of N.B.C. employees that went to New York to join ships. He and I were school friends, like brothers to each other, for all of his life time.
