At the age of 18 years in 1966, my father Mr.Gideon Rivers Jr. took up the opportunity to go to sea as his father had previously, and as many of his peers were doing. He saw this as an opportunity to help bring income to his family. At that time he had five younger siblings, the youngest being three years and one older sibling. His mother collected his allotments (salary) and he specifically asked that she use the money towards getting an indoor bathroom for the family home because he wanted this for his younger siblings. He also used some of the money for a bigger cistern for the home. He sailed on the SS Corco from 1966 to 1976 a period of 14 months. He sailed to countries such as Trinidad and Puerto Rico. As a teenager he had good carpentry skills and left seafaring to go on to a long career in construction.
