Bio

Introduction:
My father who was born in West Bay left Grand Cayman at the age of 16 years old and went to the US to join his older brother, Hurley Hydes who was working on a ship. My father joined the ship as an Oiler. During his first stint on the ship he had an accident which resulted in him rupturing his appendix and had to have emergency surgery. He rejoined the ship within a few weeks and through his dedication and hard work moved up the ranks to eventually become a Chief Engineer. He worked on multiple ships through out his career sailing on Cargo Ships to South America and Ice Breaking tugs boats on the Great Lakes in the US. In between these journeys he also worked for Marcona Ocean Ltd. as manager of a sand mining Island off of the Bahamas. My father and I were very close and I had the opportunity to accompany him at a young age on some of his journeys taking trips with him to Santo Domingo and also taking ships to dry dock. As a seaman, he would normally have weeks off and during this time at home I can recall him always getting telephone calls from other companies requesting him to come and work for them because he was a well recognised and respected Chief Engineer in the shipping industry. Even though my father was based in the US he always made it a point to return to Cayman on a regular basis. At the young age of 48 he was diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away in January 1985.
