Bio
Introduction:
Algie Horace Christian, known as Horace by family and friends made the ultimate sacrifice as many Caymanians did at that time by going to sea to support his family. Having 8 children, it was hard in those days to properly support a family, so in his early twenties Horace decided to become a seaman. Horace sailed for a few different carriers; however, it is believed that he was last employed and sailed with the popular National Bulk Carriers. The family recalls their mother sending them to the mailbox, to eagerly check for the allotment that Horace would send home to support his family, to this day they still fondly remember box #21. What made his journey at sea worth telling, like so many other seamen, was that his sacrifice for his family cost him to miss so many memorable moments such as the birth of many of his children. When Horace learned of his sons Raymond birth he was in South Africa and decided to get a tattoo in honor of his birth although being scared of needles. Many of the children did not known their father that well since he was at sea for most of their upbringing; only coming home to Cayman Brac for a few weeks at a time each year. His children recall how excited they were when daddy came home, as he would bring a bunch of gifts for everyone. However, that joy would soon turn to sadness, especially for his wife Elnora who had to raise the children on her own, when the call came through to head back to sea. His commitment and sacrifice of 22 years at sea to provide for his family is truly worth being recognized.
