Introduction:
The nominee Elsberth Terry was my father and a seaman for many years from before I was born and while growing up we were very eager for him to come home, mostly because we missed him but also we knew that he would bring us gifts. My father first sailed as an Oiler, Fireman, Maintenance but quickly worked his way up to become Chief Pumpman and from stories I heard, even before I went to sea, he was quite helpful onboard the ships that he sailed on such as the Ore Transport, Ore Venus, Harold H Helm and others. When he stopped sailing he took up carpentry and building contractor as this was the profession of his father. As a result, he was always called upon to build or repairs homes. Some of his handiwork is the Webster Memorial Church Hall and the Lighthouse Club building. Our dad always tried to help others as best he can and also told us about the ships he sailed on and the countries he visited. He was also a member of the Bodden Town Presbyterian Church now Webster Memorial and became an Elder of that congregation. We feel that our dad was one of those men who at a very young age had to leave for sea as there was very little opportunities in the Island at that time for work and it would be an honor if he was selected for this award.
