I, Annice Smith, nominate my late husband, Elrey Smith for the 2021 National Heroes Day Awards as a pioneer in the area of seafaring 1940-1980.
Elrey, like many young Caymanians went to sea at an early age (16) in order to provide financial assistance for his family. He sailed for over twenty years on various types of vessels, to many ports throughout the world.
Elrey gained many valuable life experiences at sea, which proved to be helpful when he decided to remani at home and share in the success that the Cayman Islands were experiencing in the late 1970s.
As a resut of his ability to earn a living as a seaman, Elrey was able to build his own home in Crewe Road, where he resided with me until his death in 2006.
