Introduction:
I nominate Elbert Connor for the above indicated category because as a young man at the age of 17 his desire was to go to sea not only for the experience but to also to provide for his younger siblings who needed his support. At 10 years old his mother passed away and in a single parent household he knew he needed to contribute financially as soon as possible. He also desired to be an ambassador for the Cayman Islands and to follow in the footsteps of his father and older brothers who were all seamen. He risked his life on many occasions during his time on the high seas and returned home with many tales to tell. It should also be noted that during his tenure he sailed on the SS Commonwealth, Bulk Trader, Ore Meteor, Ore Transport, Ore Venus, Ore Mercury, SS Petro Pan, SS Cavala, Imperial St. Lawrence, Imperial Ottawa and other ships where he served in various capacities - e.g. oiler, storekeeper, pump man. He travelled the world and was an excellent ambassador, telling everyone he met about his beautiful homeland the Cayman Islands and inviting them to visit. Upon his return home he transitioned from a seafarer to service with the Police Marine Unit. In light of the above I feel he is well deserving of this nomination as a Pioneer in Seafaring History and as such should be commemorated. Thanking you in advance for your kind consideration.
