Introduction:
It is with great pride and admiration for our precious, loving father that we wish to nominate him as a Pioneer in the category of Seafaring. He dedicated his early years to being at sea and overcoming many dangerous times as he provided for his family.
In 1950 at the age of 20 he left Grand Cayman to work with a Dutch Company as a messman. Later in 1951 he joined National Bulk Carriers as an Oiler. Some of these journeys took him away from home for over a year at a time. In December 1957 he joined the SS Ore Chief as a Jr. Engineer. He worked hard and moved up to become Third Assistant Engineer obtaining his Merchant Marine Officer Licence. He sailed on many ships which included the SS Bulkoil, Petroqueen, Ore Transport, Commonwealth, Petropan and sailed with several other Caymanian seamen. These large tankers would take oil to Aruba and Venezuela and haul iron ore from Venezuela. He sailed through the Suez Canal on large tankers which would go to the Persian Gulf to bring oil back to the US and other countries. In January 1962 he returned home from Honolulu to get married and later rejoined the SS Bulkoil in San Francisco. His voyages took him around the world three times as he sailed through the Suez Canal and the Panama Canal. Our father continued to sail, returning to Cayman for a few months at a time. It was difficult being away from his family however, he ensured he was home for the birth of his daughters. In July 1977 our mother joined our father on one of his voyages on board the Petropan sailing from Mobile to Trinidad. Our father decided to give up his sailing career and returned home in early 1980 to be with his family.
