Introduction:
COVER LETTER I am nominating Donald Wilmur Ebanks not because he was my father but because he truly exemplified what it meant to have Excelled at Sea ! He began his life at sea at the age of 14 as a cabin boy but his interest was always in the engines. Although he had only a Primary School education, he taught himself everything there was to know about all types of engines. Over the years, he moved up through the ranks becoming oiler, pumpman, 4th, 3rd and 2nd engineer. Eventually, again self-taught, he took the relevant examination and became a licensed Chief Engineer and during his time of working for Cayman Energy he served in the capacity of Captain and Chief Engineer on their tug. Over his lifetime, he worked with companies such as Webster Shipping, National Bulk Carriers, AstroMarine, McDermott Inc, Cayman Energy, Kirkconnel Shipping and Brac Aquatics and during World War II he served his country as a Merchant Marine and later in his community as one of the first members of the Cayman Brac Seafarers Association. He travelled the world but never neglected his family, eventually giving up his seafaring life to return home to continue his engineering career, working close to and on the sea. He left an outstanding example of what can be achieved with dedication and hard work. He was fondly known by many of his seafaring buddies as Willie Pump or Little Willie and his memory is cherished amongst his family and the Cayman Brac Community as a whole.
