Captain Devey was born in Little Cayman to James Allen and Julia Foster Scott. When a storm (possibly 1917) destroyed the family home, Devey brought the remnants to Cayman Brac by catboat and rebuilt the home there. He spent his career at sea, building s boat and moving his family to Jacksonville when times in the Brac got tough, and shipping from there. The records of his ships and seafaring are available in Little Cayman Maritime Museum. At least two of his sons, Allen and Erben, followed in his footsteps and had careers at sea.
