Captain David Chesley Parsons (“Salt Dog”)
Born on the 8th of October 1921 to David & Lina Parsons of West Bay,
Captain Chesley, began his career at sea at the age of 16. His first
voyage was on board the M.V Swanny of the “Swanny Shipping
Company” as an ordinary seaman.
In the years that followed he gained his Master Mariners license and
assumed command of the M.V. Insco Merchant, while working for the
Insco Trading Company.
In 1943 he married Ms. Sarah Gloria Ebanks “GoGo” the daughter of the
late Captain Allie O Ebanks. Following his marriage, he began sailing
aboard the schooner the M.V, A. M. Adams with his father in law Captain
Allie. He assumed command of the Adams upon the retirement of Capt.
Allie.
A typical crew aboard the Adams was 17 men comprised of rangers and
sailors. Voyages were mainly from the Cayman Islands to Key West and
the Mosquito Keys. A voyage could last anywhere from 6 -8 weeks
during which time the crew would sail to the mosquito keys to capture
green sea turtle, travel back to Grand Cayman, offload some of the
catch and rangers and then to Key West to sell the remaining turtles.
The main buyer in Key West was the AM Grande Cannning Company.
Captain Chesley spent the next 15 plus years of his life suppling and
maintaining the turtling industry. These voyages were the primary source
of income for many Caymanian families. His crew consisted of young
Caymanian seamen from all districts.
As the Captain of the Adams, he navigated many storms, rescued many
distressed vessels and earned the reputation of being able to find any
ship simply by being told of the location, cloud coverage, sea and
weather conditions. His voyages have been written about in the National
Georgraphic and other literary publications.
A Sea Captain who started sailing vessels in 1934, retired from the sea
in 1982.
