Introduction:
I proudly nominated my father Dallas S. Ebanks for this humble award. In 1954 Like most Caymanian men Dads seafarers career began at the early age of 14 years. In 1959, he sailed as a deck man, making many voyages to the Turtle Keys with my Grandfather the late Captain Osbert Ebanks, Later he became turtle boat owner and made continued to make many voyages as Captain. His last voyage was in 1982 when the turtle was declared an endangered species, in fact he was the last Captain to make the voyage to the Mosquito Keys, where he returned with loaded of 76 turtle which was the end of 'Cayman Turtle Seafarers'. Not all his voyages was joyful and successful he experienced a shipwreck in 1970 On this unfortunate trips, he almost single handed had to save his entire crew, due to exhaustion, dehydration and the majority of the crew beginning to hallucinate and lose their minds. For six days they were at sea and he did not sleep a wink, as he had keep watch on his crew as he had to restrained a few of them. He had to use the sail as a make shift to collect a little water also trying to keep sail on the little life boat. He eventually landed in Honduras and all crew members made it home alive. I remember one survival trait my dad shared with us. In an effort to help avoid dehydration-is to put something in your mouth eg a button or something similar. He used a very small dice, this helped to make saliva and will help to prevent dehydration. When he returned home, he brought the dice with him and it was completely wore down on all sides, and was about quarter the original size. Although there is only one other crew member alive now Mr Alfonza Ebanks to his crew they consider my dad is a hero. (This is a full story that needs to be recorded to the fullness). In addition, during these years he also became a pioneer in the development North Sound /Rum point Tourism attraction having been involved since the early 1960s, he also sailed many year on many US and West Indies cargo ships.
