Bio

Introduction:
I nominate the above person for the above indicated category because he, like many young boys and men of that era in the Cayman Islands, contributed much to the development of these islands. In 1964 when he was only 15 years old he went on his first turtling trip to the Miskito Cays aboard the M/V Cayman Venture, owned and captained by his uncle, Capt. John Powery. This was followed by several more trips to the Cays, often encountering severe weather conditions. The work was gruelling but he enjoyed the seafaring life and adapted well to the change and on some of these trips he had the privilege of being in the company of his father, Capt. Jude Powery. Both his father and his uncle observed his keen interest and skills and realized his potential. They began teaching him many navigational techniques which he enjoyed learning. He now takes pleasure passing on these to his adult son and friends who enjoy deep-sea fishing. In January 1967 when Creston was 17 years old he joined National Bulk Carriers on the Edward L. Steineger as an Ordinary Seaman (OS). His skills realized, he was soon promoted to Able Bodied Seaman (ABS). The Captain, a Norwegian who was a man of little words and not well liked by the crew, observing him one day told him he looked familiar and asked his name. On hearing it the Captain asked if he was related to Jude Powery, which he responded that he was his son. Creston learned that his father had saved his life and from then onwards the Captain was very nice to him. In 1971 Creston retired from the seafaring life as employment opportunities in the construction industry began booming in these islands but his love for the sea remains as strong as ever.
