Introduction:
Cornell Lloyd Anthony Burke started his seafaring career at the very tender age of 15, to provide for his siblings and other family. His first employer was Capt. 'Bertie' Foster of West End, Cayman Brac, sailing on the Foster Enterprise as Oiler/3rd Engineer. Throughout his career he sailed on the following ships:
Ore Chief
Petrokure (later renamed Gin Pet)
St. Lawrence
Currico
Grand Tide
He started as a Wiper, and also held the positions of Fireman, Oiler, Maintenance Man, and Engineer and succeeded in advancing to the rank of Chief Engineer.
He returned to the sea off and on throughout the years serving as an Chief Engineer with marine colleagues Capt. Eddylee Martin, Winston McDermott, Capt. I. Lawford Tatum, and others to do Marine Transport from various ports in the USA to the Cayman Islands both commercially and for leisure because he was revered for his mechanical and sea-going knowledge.
Cornell along with Capt. Eddylee Martin was responsible for the delivery of the vessels from West Palm Beach, Fl to Cayman Brac used by Cayman Energy in the ship to ship transfers during the late 70s ' mid 80s. Years later he was the same gentleman he took one of their vessels the Kissimmee to its final resting place as a dive site at the West End of the island.
He is also one of the few turtlers remaining in the Cayman Islands that are licensed by the Cayman Islands Government to continue this practice.
Throughout the years he has shared his knowledge with many and recounted numerous times of the many life lessons his learned at sea and of all the places he visited; from the Asian and European continents, to Africa, South America the Caribbean and North America.
To this end we nominate him for Excelled at Sea.
