Bio
Introduction:
PIONEER NOMINEE - CLINTON ALBERT WHITTAKER of Frank Sound, Grand Cayman
Desiring to obtain the highest level of education available locally, Clinton's uncle, Austin, made an unusual request from Mr Hicks, requesting that if he allowed Clinton to live with him in Georgetown to attend school, Clinton would repay him by doing odd jobs including making his breakfast, cleaning toilets, running his errands.
In 1950, at 16, Clinton traveled from Cayman to Canada to join the crew of Sun Rit as a "Mess-man" (the "all-around-man" who cleans all the mess in bedrooms, dining area, and kitchen). Being ambitious, during his free time, he watched how other jobs were done and volunteered time doing those duties to learn. His passion for learning and his aptitude for hard work did not go unnoticed as the Captain of the Hummel promoted him to 2nd Cook. He also sailed on the Demaris, the Ore Neptune and the Commander as 2nd Cook. He later was promoted to Chief Cook on the Common Wealth. He then sailed the Defender as Chief Cook and was later promoted to Steward. The Steward was person in charge of all Mess-men, 2nd Cook and Chief Cook. He ensured there was enough supplies on board from port to port and supervised the kitchen and the quarters of crew and officers.
Clinton also assisted other seamen by writing letters to their families and by reading the replies sent back.
After retiring he built, owned and managed several small businesses where he cooked, sold groceries, and taught his skills, also employing the infamous "Miss Gwen". He helped build residential and commercial buildings, including the Lighthouse Club, and the 19th Hole Mini Golf Club and managed and cooked at both places.
After Hurricane Ivan he received calls from incoming ships and alerted the Port Authority, as his job included re-fueling boats.
