Introduction:
We the family, wife and children of Cleavy Astor Jackson, better known as 'Sammy' wish to nominate him for two categories of Pioneer and Memorial Scroll. Sammy started his seafaring days at the age of 20 years on the 13th November 1953 and completed his seafaring days in December 1965. He moved up the ranks from Messman to 3rd Assistant Engineer having sailed on numerous big ships at sea. These years gained him knowledge and experience that enabled him to become the first Port Superintendent and Port Director of the Cayman Islands and later as the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Communication, Works and District Administration. He sailed on many large ships which are listed below and visited many countries across the world. He also trained in many jurisdictions across the world like New York, USA and Switzerland. Sammy passed away on 12th August 2020 and we would like him to as he died of stage 4 of COPD cause by exposure to asbestos and developed a condition called asbestosis. On these various ships he was required to work with and mix asbestos by hand and apply this material to the pipes of the engines that generated the heat that operated the ships. Whilst he may not have died at sea he paid the ultimate price and gave the ultimate sacrifice he died as a result of the exposure to asbestos on the ships and suffered for 30 years with much discomfort and suffering until he was completely disabled. He was never told of the dangers of asbestos nor given a mask to wear and may not have died as others when you think of giving or saving a life at sea but he paid the ultimate price nonetheless and lost his life as a result of asbestosis.
