Introduction:
Christopher AKA Claudius Glasgow sailed with National Bulk Carriers for 10 years, from 1956 to 1966. His first ship, the "Phoenix", sailed out of Marcus Hook, Philadelphia and returned to this port many times to unload its cargo of oil. He later sailed on other ships including "Bulk Oil", again carrying oil from such places as Venezuela and the Persian Gulf States. Most of the crew on the ships on which he sailed were Caymanian.
Mr Glasgow worked in the engine room, first as a Wiper and then as a Fireman monitoring the gauges on the huge boilers that made steam for the ships. Although the engine room was very hot with the gauges reading 127 degrees Fahrenheit, Mr Glasgow was committed to his job and received commendations from his superiors, the Engineer and Junior Engineer for contributing to the overall safety of the crew and ship.
Mr Glasgow undertook additional watchman duties where possible, for example when his ship was in port in order to earn more to support his wife, Mrs Corine AKA "Beamie" Glasgow and their children at home in Cayman.
Like many of his Caymanian sailing mates, he sent his money home to his wife, "Ms Beamie" as she was affectionately called, who managed the money, household and their 6 children: Annie May Seymour, Bridget Glasgow-Scott, Olive Gregory, Claudius Glasgow (deceased), Corinne Glasgow, and Sheena Glasgow. When he returned home from sea, he and his buddies would help each other build their family homes before returning to sea.
In so doing, he and other seafarers laid the foundation for a modern Cayman. Their seafaring and construction skills were then used to build office buildings and hotels for what has become the pillars of our economy - the financial and hospitality industries.
