Island Supplier Vessel Messman period 1976 to 1978,
We were anchored in the Port of Tampa, but we did not put out enough chain, and the vessel started to drift. The Anchor was dragging and hooked into the Tampa Area electrical grid supply line. When we tried to hoist the anchor to reposition the vessel, the anchor came up with Tampa's main electrical grid wires attached. The Coast Guard was called and arranged for the shore power to be cut. We were advised not to move an inch, and the power company came out and dislodged the cables. On another trip, coming from the Port of Cortez in Honduras, loaded with 12,000 bags of Portland Cement. Had just picked up the 2nd Engineer, who was new to the ship. He forgot to transfer fuel from the storage tank to the day tank, and the vessel lost power in the middle of the night. We had to retrieve the emergency battery from the captain's office and transport it to the engine room to start the generator, which enabled us to get the radios working. I had to take the battery on my back in the dark with a flashlight.

Tropic Isle Vessel 3rd Asst. Engineer period 1980 to 1982,
Left West Palm Beach heading to St Croix and lost power as we were getting into St Croix. It was my responsibility to transfer the fuel from the storage tank to the day tank, and I forgot to do so. The Captain ordered to drop the anchor until we could transfer the fuel manually by 5-gallon buckets.

Sailing from Jamaica on way to Boston with a load of Ductile Iron Pipe and she was so loaded that seas were washing over that deck. Cape Hateras weather was bad at the time. American Coast Guard Helicopter stopped us in the middle of night to verify our ligitimacy before allowing us to continue.
