Introduction:
I nominate the above person because he is well deserving to be recognize as an "Early Pioneer" in the seafaring community. My father, affectionately known as Capt. Marvin, sailed on the high seas from the tender age of 12 years. He took these voyages with his father and other young boys and their fathers, as they strived to make a living for their families. He left Cayman on a Schooner, carrying cat boats and building supplies, which was mainly thatch. They set sail to an island off Nicaragua called Mosquito Quay(key). There they built their thatch huts to live in for several days at a time, whilst they caught turtles using large fish nets thrown from their cat boats, which they returned to Cayman to sell and also to feed their families. They also fished for Sharks, where the skin of the sharks were soaked in barrels of salts, from which they exported the skins to other countries, e.g. Jamaica and the United States, where the skins were used to make handbags, shoes and other products, likewise the shells of the Turtles were used to make various products, but mainly jewelry. Capt.Marvin, worked on many ships which shipped out from the United States and Canada and travelled to many parts of the world to work. He gained employment with the National Bulk Carriers, where he worked on many ships, the most popular was the "Addie H". He worked throughout most of the United States, Europe, Canada, Asia, the Caribbean, just to name a few. On one occasion as he was en voyage from Athens Greece carrying cargo to the United States, the ship began to take in water and leaned on one side, which would have caused the ship to sink. Someone needed to go down in the bottom of the ship and knock the plug out from tank #1 so the water would also flow into tank#2, in order to "ballace" the ship. As it was freezing water in the bottom of the ship and it was dark, no one on board wanted to go down, for fear of freezing to death. Marvin took the hand mall from the Capt. and told the Captain of the ship "Capt. whether we freeze to death or drown, we are all going to be dead!". He took the mall and did the unthinkable, thereby saving himself and the many souls on board. After many years of working on the high seas, whether it was turtling, carrying products, being a steward on board ships, his rough seas finally subsided. He built his first boat by hand in 1960. Thereby he started taking tourist to the Sand Bar, which was later named "Stingray City by National Geographic, who listed him as one of the founders of Stingray City. For Capt. Marvin's enduring years of hardship and dedication to the seafaring community, I hereby take it a great priviledge to nominate him for the recognition of the award as an "Early Pioneer".
