Master, USMM
Mr. Hurlstone was Master of the SS Mariana, an American (steam) merchant ship, on March 5, 1942 as it made its way from Puerto Rico to Boston with a cargo of sugar. The unarmed, unescorted steamer was 47 miles north of Grand Turk Island, in the Turks and Caicos Islands, when it was hit aft of the mast by one torpedo. The torpedo was fired from German submarine U-126, and the SS Mariana sank within five minutes of being hit.
There were 36 Merchant Mariners on board; none survived.
