Introduction:
I nominate the above referenced individual in the early pioneer category because he was the master of a number of Caymanian vessels that connected Cayman to the outside world from 1916 to 1956. He was one of those captains from the time of wooden ships and iron men. Cap'n Charlie, who was sharp as a tack, went to sea at age 16 and by age 21 was known as the youngest captain sailing into and out of the port of Tampa. His ships sailed to Isle of Pines Cuba, the Bay Islands Honduras and other ports carrying passengers and freight. He also acted as buyer for many of Cayman's early entrepreneurs and was universally loved for his dependability and his unchallenged honesty ' Ms. Annie Huldah-Bodden called him 'the most honest man in Cayman'. Through his friends at the firm of Humphrey & McGregor he made representations to the U.S. Government to allow Caymanian men, once they had a job offer, to enter the United States without a visa or waiver. In 1932 his motor vessel, the Nunoca was the first boat to arrive in Cayman Brac carrying freshwater and supplies for the beleaguered community following the devastating hurricane. When the British warship arrived the Nunoca ferried men and materiel from the warship to shore as the warship had to 'anchor off' due to its draft. Over his career he was supercargo on the Goldfield and master of the Caymanian sailing vessels, the Albion, the Gold Medal, and the Tuecoi and the motor vessels the Noca, the Nunoca and the Addie H. Cap'n Charlie was known as honest, frank, plain spoken, intelligent, unprejudiced, punctual and loyal. He brought the first motor car to Cayman on the Nunoca, floating it ashore on a quickly contrived raft. He was a pioneer indeed! CAPT.CHARLES GARFIELD FARRINGTON WAS BORN ON THE 28TH AUGUST 1895 AND DIED IN 1980 AT THE AGE OF 85 YEARS. AT AN EARLY AGE HE LEARNT NAVIGATION FROM AN ELDERLY MAN IN WEST BAY. HE WAS ABLE TO PASS ON THIS KNOWELEDGE TO MANY YOUNG MEN. AT THE YOUNG AGE OF 21, HE STARTED TO SAIL THE HIGH SEAS, AND HIS FIRST BOAT TO SAIL ON WAS THE GOLDFIELD. HE BECAME CAPTAIN OF THE GOLDFIELD TAKING THE BOAT INTO THE TAMPA BAY. IT WAS HERE HE BOUGHT HIS OWN BOAT THE ADDIE 'H'. CAPT. CHARLIE, AS HE WAS CALLED, STARTED MANY YOUNG MECHANTS INTO BUSINESS. HIS TRUSTWORTHINESS AND HONESTY ALLOWED HIM TO PURCHASE GOODS AND PAY LATER. THE MERCHANDISE WOULD ENCLUDE: LUMBER, BOLTS OF CLOTH, FOOD . HE WOULD BRING THESE SUPPLIES TO CAYMAN AND PAY ON HIS RETURN TRIP TO THE USA. HE PREFERRED SAILED BOATS TO MOTOR BOATS, AS HE FEARED THE SUBMARINES AT NIGHT, COULD DETECT THE SOUND QUICKER WITH MOTOR BOATS. AFTER THE DEVISTATION OF THE 1932 HURRICANE IN CAYMAN BRAC, HE QUICKLY LOADED BARRELS OF WATER ON THE ADDIE 'H' TO TAKE TO THE BRAC AS DRINKING WATER WAS SCARCE THERE. ON THIS TRIP HE MET AND MADE MANY FRIENDS.
