Introduction:
Captain Charles Christopher Bush Captain Bush was born on 19 February 1864 in South Sound. At a very early age he went to sea to Man-o-War Cays off the coast of Nicaragua to catch turtles. He was extremely ambitious and despite the fact that he was substantively unable to read or write he learnt navigation, became a Captain and vessel owner. His vessel was named 'Diamond' which parted anchor in South Sound in the 1932 hurricane and drifted out to sea, never to be seen again. Due to his honesty in business and skill in catching turtles off the Nicaraguan coast he was now in great demand by other vessel owners to captain their vessels, which he did. It was often told that he was a harsh disciplinarian at sea on the vessels, to the point of being miserable. However, seamen for East End to West Bay would line up to get a chance to make a sea voyage with him as they knew whatever they earned they were sure to get their fair share. This was his legacy. He when on to be in partnership with J.S Webster who when he migrated to Jamaica entrusted him the properties now called Webster Estate and Smith Barcadere as the Administrator. He was advised that after so many years as the overseer of these properties and in the absence of a formal agreement he could put in a claim to have these transferred in his name. True to his convection of honesty he refused to do so and said that 'what is not yours; is not yours'. Captain Christopher had two of his sons, Charles and Carl Bush along with his grandsons John and Paul Hurlston who attained the rank of sea Captains. He died at his home on the corner of Walkers Road and South Sound Road on 2 December 1942 at the age of 78 years.
