Introduction:
I nominate the above person for the above indicated category because of his resilient and courageous spirit to face the unknow of a seaman' life . Like most young men of his era, Charles, known Carlton, went to sea to earn a living, and in turn, supported the meager local economy of his beloved homeland. His time at sea spanned approximately thirty seven years. During this time, he experienced the usual seaman's life of seeing the world and much more. Carlton's positions of his seafaring career started in the lower ranks, such as deckhand and cabin boy. From there, this ambitious and ambidextrous young man rose to the level of Chief Mate.
His travels took him to the major continents of the world which included the following countries and quays: the famous Mosquito Quay in Nicaragua, Cuba, the United States of America, Canada, Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad, Jamaica, France.
Some of the ships that Carlton sailed on were the Goldfield, the Suwannee Steamship Company boats.
During the time of Carlton's seaman's, life, the beloved schooner Goldfield was in her glory days traveling between Grand Cayman and Tampa. The Goldfield served as a passenger and freighter transport between the two countries. A memorable trip on the Goldfield for Carton was with his son, Lewis, shortly after the end of World War 11. On this trip, in addition to cargo, they brought back caskets and a car for Stafford Ebanks. Along with the joy of this trip, was a near tragedy. Carlton accidentally fell over board and had to be rescued by his ship mates. From this incident, he emerged unharmed but very shaken, as expected.
On the Suwannee Steamship Company cargo boats, Carlton and shipmates transported bauxite from Guyana and Suriname to Trinidad for shipment to the US and Canada. Among other Suwannee boats,
Carlton sailed on one by the named of Samana.
Though Carton's young and middle-aged years were spent at sea, he had a profound love for the land and farming. Following his retirement from sea, he focused his time and energy on farming, growing many different types of ground provisions, corn, tomatoes, vine grapes and other crops.
