Introduction:

Nomination of ABBY VENETTA WALTON (deceased) for 2021 National Heroes Day Awards: Celebrating our

Seafaring Heritage

•      My  aunt was born in Spot Bay, Cayman Brae on 11 January 1925 and passed away on 8 September

2014

•     My aunt was a brave and courageous woman who was determined to undertake gainful employment

to help her parents raise their 14 children; her parents had lost 2 sons at sea: one during World

War II and one in a hurricane so the family needed all the financial assistance they could get

•     She sailed with her father Mr  William Lemuel Scott who  was the Cook on the  "Taylor'' and

the "Wilkie" for approximately 11 1/2 years between 1947- 1948 at age 22. She sailed from Cayman Brae

to Jamaica, Haiti and Honduras

•     She was in-listed as a crew and undertook duties as a Messman: helping her father in the galley

and washing the clothing, bed linen, and towels of the entire crew
