Reginald Bloomfield Kirkconnell was the
oldest son of Walter Aaron and Judith Scott Kirkconnell. He was born on Cayman
Brac in 1874 and had his captain’s license by the time he was 20.
His father found a large tree that had washed up on the south side of Cayman
Brac. Walter, who was a merchant, not a seaman, took this as a sign from God
that he was to use this driftwood to build a ship. This was used to build the
schooner “Eva Swift”, which was crewed by Reginald and his brothers. Of
the eight brothers, Reginald, William, Walter, Shirley, Nathaniel, Moses, Sr.,
Charles G., and Ebert, five were lost at sea, and only three lived long enough
to be buried on dry land.
Capt. Reggie sailed as Captain for 52 years, and never lost a ship or put one
ashore. In 1946, at the age of 74, he finally decided to retire. In
his lifetime, he held unlimited captain’s licenses for both sail and
power. Between the first ship in 1895 and his death, Capt. Reggie was a
Justice of the Peace and served in the Legislature as a representative for the
Sister Islands. He was a part-owner of at least 20 ocean-going sailing and
motor vessels. At the age of 87, Captain Reginald passed away in 1961.
The shipping company he founded, R. B. Kirkconnell & Bro., continued until
1987.
