Introduction:
As a seaman pioneer, Wordsworth L. Powery started sailing at the age of 18-years. His first voyage was to Swan Island. His seaman career started in 1946 where he joined his first ship in Aruba on the Beacon Hill. He later joined the national bulk in 1957.
He started to sail on American ships in 1966. Some of the American ships he sailed with are the SS Texaco Florida, SS Green Valley, SS Helen H, Texaco Louisiana, SS Gulf service, SS U.S. Defender, SS Rappahannock, Green Cove, Trans Gulf, MS Trans Gulf, Transoceanic Mariner, and the SS Gulf Lion.
Some of the sea Ports around the world he sailed to were Russia-twice, England, Canada, Korea, Vietnam, Iran, Iraq. During the Vietnam War, he sailed on ships carrying supplies to Vietnam.
In 1985, he retired as a seaman and returned back to the Cayman Islands. After a few months at home, he worked at the Holiday Inn and then Foster's Food Fair for several years.
