Like most young men during the Seafaring era, William left home in early 30s in pursuit of employment, and sailed on many schooners to the Keys, trapping turtles and picking bird eggs. He also sailed on the Kirkconnell vessels - Kirk B, Kirk C around Jamaica, Cayman Islands and USA. William was a Home Guard before and during World War 2 and sailed as AB, OS with National Bulk.
