Introduction:
I NOMINATE MY LATE FATHER, WILLIAM LEROY CROWE (KNOWN AS "LEE") IN THE CATEGORY OF PIONEER. MY FATHER WENT TO SEA FROM THE AGE OF 24, WHEN HE CAME HERE FROM CUBA. HE CONTINUED TO SEA FOR THIRTY-SEVEN YEARS UNTIL PREMATURELY RETIRING AT AGE 61. UNFORTUNATELY HIS SEAFARING CAREER CAME TO A STOP DUE TO AN INJURY HE SUSTAINED ON THE "ORE VENUS" IN THE 1980'S. HE WAS STRUCK BY A HEAVY OBJECT THAT FRACTURED HIS SKULL AND BROKE HIS NECK. HIS FAMILY DID NOT HEAR FROM HIM AND DID NOT KNOW WHETHER HE WAS DEAD OR ALIVE UNTIL CONTACTED BY THE COMPANY'S LAWYER ADVISING THAT HE WAS IN CRITICAL CONDITION IN THE HOSPITAL. IT WAS ALMOST FIVE MONTHS BEFORE HE WAS ABLE TO TRAVEL HOME. LIKE MOST CAYMANIAN SEAMAN OF HIS TIME, HE STARTED OUT AS A MESSMAN BUT WITHIN 2 YEARS, WAS PROMOTED TO PUMPMAN AND IN THREE YEARS TO CHIEF PUMPMAN. HE RETIRED AS CHIEF PUMPMAN. I WAS TOLD BY MR. GURNEY PANTON THAT HE WAS THE BEST AND STRONGEST PUMPMAN HE HAD EVER SEEN AND ESPECIALLY GOING THROUGH THE PANAMA CANAL. I FEEL THAT MY FATHER IS MOST WORTHY OF THIS RECOGNITION AND HOPE THAT YOU WILL SEE FIT TO AWARD THIS POSTHUMOUSLY.
