At the age of 14 he went turtling in the Miskito Cays. During WW11 he worked on a ship transporting supplies from Jamaica to England. On one trip, he felt strongly that he should not go and on that voyage. The ship was attacked by a German submarine and all lives were lost. He continued in that job until the end of the war. His next job was serving as First Mate on the Mizpah, a Cayman owned motor vessel. The ship transported bananas from Ecuador to Tampa, Miami and Cayman. He joined the Suwanee Company and sailed as First Mate. He subsequently obtained his Captain's license and sailed as Captain of the M/V Cecile Erickson until his retirement in 1970. The Cecile transported Morton Salt between the Bahamas and Virginia and Brunswick, GA.
