Introduction:
I nominate Captain Willie, because he should be recognized for all of his time spent working on the Schooner Jemsons and Armistice. He was Captain when he went to Jamaica and brought back Medical aid during the Typhoid outbreak. He was captain when he went to Jamaica and loaded food for Belize, as they had no vessels and food was getting low. The request for the Cayman Islands assistance, came from the British authorities. He take seamen who needed a job to Tampa, Fl. Capt. Willie would call mostly Jacksonville Florida, and talk to the shipping companies, to find out if they needed crew members. Should the call prove successful, the men signed off from the Jemsons. It was said that on one of these trips Capt. Bill was asked by the immigration in Tampa, why such a large crew, to which he answered, "well there is a war being fought, and I thought I would bring extra crew."
So many Cayman seamen owe a debt of gratitude to this Seafarer who was a brilliant man and he wore many hats, but his primary focus was always on how he could help his fellow Cayman people. In nineteen thirty two he was on the North coast of Jamaica on the schooner Armistice, Capt. Willie received a message from his owners, that a hurricane was between Jamaica and Cayman Brac, and to delay his sailing. Captain Willie did that and kept the Schooner Armistice from being caught in one of the Cayman Islands worst hurricanes.
