Introduction:
I nominate the above person for the above indicated category because: he is my grandfather. He worked as a carpenter and a seafarer, working his way up to captain. He sailed on ships traveling between Cayman and the Mosquito Cays near Nicaragua transporting turtle rangers and turtles. In September 1941 he was asked to go on the Majestic along with Captain Stedman Bodden to pick up turtle rangers from the Cays, he accepted the job. On 27th September 1941 while they were at the Cays a storm came in on them. Some rangers left the ship to weather out the storm on the Cay but my grandfather decided to weather the storm on the ship. When the storm broke the ship was gone along with all the men who stayed on the ship. My grandfather, Capt. Thomas Dilmore Conolly never returned home. I nominate the above person for the indicated category because he sailed as Captain/Mate between Cayman and the Mosquito Cays dropping off and picking up turtle rangers. On the last voyage of the Majestic, he sailed as Chief Mate, when the storm caught them at Mosquito Cay on that fateful day, 27th September 1941, while others were leaving the ship to weather the storm on one of the Cays, he refused to abandon ship and ultimately was lost with the ship.
