Introduction:
At the age of 14, Capt. Aubrey Ebanks traveled to the Miskito Banks (Keys) to take part in turtling like many Caymanian men of those days. A few years later at the age of 19, Capt. Aubrey enlisted in the Royal Navy during World War II. While serving in the war, he sailed on British torpedo ships as a sailor. After his duty in World War II, he went to New York to study navigation gaining his Captain's License and various other qualifications. Thereafter, he captained several cargo ships that ran between Cuba and the USA. He also worked on local ships such as the Merco owned by the Merrins and the Tmack which was owned by a local West Bayer. These Caymanian owned ships ran between Cayman, Jamaican and the USA carrying various cargo such as salt and corn. In 1956, he was employed by National Bulk Carriers (NBC). He was hired by NBC as third mate and was one of the first Caymanians to be employed as an officer on the NBC ships where he climbed the ranks to chief mate. During his Southwell years he sailed on oil tankers and bulk carriers such as Sinclair Petrolore, Universe Commander, Ore-Neptune and many others. For a few years, he also captained the barge, Westcliff, which was stationed in Jamaica towing large ships in and out of the Kingston harbor. Lastly, he captained the cargo ship the Cecile Erickson from the late 70's until his retirement in 1986. Capt. Aubrey was a hardworking man and an outstanding captain with a great love for the sea. He dedicated 40+ years at sea in order to provide for his family and was also able to provide jobs on ships for many fellow Caymanians.
