Bio
Introduction:
I nominate Shem Powery for the pioneer category because from the age of 13 in 1939, he went to the Mosquito Quays to catch turtles. At the age of 17, he got employed for International Boat Carriers as an AB Seaman through a friend from the Brac. He was one of the first Caymanians to be employed by the company in 1943. During his time on the seas, he went on several ships and took on many positions, because he had to take whatever available in order to leave each country after 29 days. Two of the names of the ships that he went on were "The Iron Ore Chief" and "Lumina Daphne". Shem worked on the ships up until after the 1960's, however he is now 94 years old and is unsure as to when exactly he completely stopped going out to sea.
