Samuel Ashbert Hurlston
Samuel was born in September 1893 and when to sea at an early age to the Nicaraguan Coast to catch turtles with Captain Charles Christopher Bush on the schooner Diamond. He was also a crew member in the early years on such vessels as the Admiral Strudy, Cimboco, Caymanina and Armindia.
In the 1940's Samuel along with fellow Caymanian Mr. Norberg Thompson were survivors on a Royal Dutch Air Line (KLM) plane that crashed on takeoff in Jamaica. He was also a crew member on the M/V Lady Slater when it burnt down off Port Royal, Jamaica. He was the person who saved her Captain one Ellie Acourt Bodden of George Town by swimming with him through shark infested waters until help arrived. He was also on a US Navy supply ship along with Mr. Thompson that got cut down by another ship around the island of Aruba. He was also credited for saving the lives of Nurse Earl Bush (Pinky) and her sisters from drowning while they were swimming in South Sound.
Samuel worked many years for National Bulk Carries on ships such as the S/S Percy Jordon, S/S Ore Regent, and S/S Petro Emperor.
Upon retirement from the sea he was known as a famous painter of buildings and an all-round man. He was also a good story teller with a great since on humor. He died on December 28, 1985 at the age of 92 years.
