Introduction:
In his youth he was an active member of the Sea Scouts. He began his seafaring career at the age of 19 as a 'galley man'. He advanced in the steward department to the level of Chief Cook. On deck he advanced from the level of Ordinary Seaman to that of Bosun Mate. In the engine room he worked from the beginning level of Wiper to the level of Junior Engineer. This means that he worked at the highest level possible without having a licence.
