Bio

Introduction:
I nominate the above person for the above indicated category because: Robert Lee Smith was well known and highly respected by all throughout our islands. He was a man of few words. He was always mindful that speaking the truth was most often unpopular but necessary which reinforced his unquestionable integrity and caring character. He was a true son of the soil. He began his Seaman's career at a young age. Daddy excelled in the various duties he performed on US and UK registered ships. He was well respected by the captains and worked on the bridge as leading Quarter Master. In 1941, he sailed on the British vessel S.S. Stanpark, owned by Stanhope Steamship Co. carrying supplies from New York to England. Before setting sail on the trip that would affect their lives forever, the shipping agent tapped them on their shoulders and said 'good luck boys', not knowing what would take place. On January 20, 1941, the crew of the S.S. Stanpark was captured by the Germans. The ship was torpedoed by Pocket Battleship Admiral Scheer. Thankfully, they did not follow their usual pattern in torpedoing the ship with the crew on board. The crew was taken to a Prison in Bremen, Germany where they spent four years as prisoners of war. Despite this horrible experience Daddy was a hard-working and peace-loving citizen of these islands, an excellent example for his children. He sailed around the globe, quietly making his contribution to the development and prosperity of these islands. He retired from sea in 1974. He was of service in a time of need, remaining faithful and steadfast, always helping those who were less fortunate and thinking of others before himself. We are very much honored and privileged to have had a father of the caliber and fortitude of Robert Lee Smith.
