At age 12 he was hired to watch the 'Adams' while in Cayman.
On his first trip he recalls, with pride, his 1st pay check being used to buy blocks to build their house.
Once while on the Universe Ireland, he experienced his 1st storm aboard ship. After experiencing the huge ship rolling from side to side - filled with oil - it made him decide that perhaps a life at sea was not for him.
Also while on the Universe Ireland he got sick with his appendix 9 days out of port and when they arrived in Ireland he was rushed to a hospital in Cork and the next morning he had surgery to remove them.
