Introduction:
Captain Robert C. Foster, 1890 - 1968 "Bertie, as he was commonly known, was from one of Cayman Brac's prominent and ambitious families. Like him, three of his siblings became highly respected sea-captains and three of his sons did likewise. During his time, a career as sea-captain, was considered to be one of the most highly respected positions one could ever attain. As a seaman he visited most of the ports in the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico and the United States Atlantic coast." "Early in his career, he joined with partners and bough cargo ships. Among them was a three-mast schooner which was also diesel-powered, enabling the ship to meet delivery deadlines. After World War 2 he bought US Navy surplus motor-ships cheap, and converted them for transporting lumber. Later on, he bought ships from Europe which also transported cargo and passengers to various parts of the Caribbean. With his ambition and foresight, he became one of the largest ship owner/operators in the British West Indies." "In the late nineteen-forties, after he retired from sea, he operated a marine radio-telephone from his home to keep in constant tough with his ships. He was thus able to ensure efficient operation of his fleet."
