Introduction:
I, Thomas Parsons, Jr., grandson of Captain Reginald Benson Parsons and on behalf of all of his grandchildren, hereby nominate Captain Reginald B. Parsons for Early Pioneer.
Captain Parsons was the Master of the Cayman Islands Schooner, Goldfield. The Goldfield sailed from Cayman to Tampa, Jamaica, Nicaragua (specifically the Miskito Coast) as well other ports throughout the Caribbean. This was a true sailing vassal, having no engines. Captain Parsons also raised a large family in his hometown area of West Bay in the Mount Pleasant area. He was an Early Pioneer, being Master of the Caymanian built Goldfield and bringing Cargo and supplies to the Cayman Islands. Trading in Turtle meat and handmade Thatch Rope which was used on ships also. He was an excellent Navigator also. There was an incident with the Goldfield having broken her moorings during a the nigh with a heavy squall, and the US Navy Base in Grand Cayman, called to look for the Goldfield. Captain Parsons has advised them to look over this direction and they had their own search parameters. Not finding the Schooner, they decided to try Captain Parsons suggestion, and yes found the Goldfield in the exact area where Captain Parsons said it was, which means he really knew the waters and currents around the Cayman Islands. Captain Reginald Parsons was never happier than when his ship was under full sail and enjoyed winning most of the Easter Regattas with the other Cayman Schooners every year. Captain Parsons had made a career on the sea and was well respected by his peers and crew. He was deeply knowledgeable in sailing and navigation and to bring his ship in every time home and safe. He was born in the year 1887 and had seen Cayman through the developing years and contributed to the well-being of the inhabitants of Grand Cayman. He lived a long life up to 87 years having pass on in 1973.
