Bio
Introduction:
Inexperienced and with limited education, Arvery Henry Hurlston became a seaman at age 17. Intending to provide financially for his stepmother and later his own family, the journey began as a Messman. Determined to succeed, Avery's ambitious, personable nature and willingness to learn were admirable. As such, Avery was promoted five times in the nine years away at sea, eventually becoming a Bo's'n. His selflessness enabled his family to live comfortably, providing them with land and a home.
Arvery joined the Universe Commander as a Messman and 2nd Cook in June 1959 to Aug 1960. Later that year, in November 1960, he joined the S.S. Ore Regent as a bedroom steward, a position he held until December 1962. On the next voyage, he was promoted to Ordinary Sailor on the Harold H. Helm from March 1963 to Aug 1964. During his time on the Harold H. Helm, a tragic accident occurred in which both of the Captain's legs (Capt. McGuire) were severed from his body. Arvery, along with other Caymanians on deck, rushed to the captain's aid, escorting him to safety and onto a tender vessel bound for the hospital for treatment. Following that voyage, Avery joined the S.S. Fresia as an Able Seaman (AB) from November 1964 to November 1965. Next, he joined the S.S. Gem Ret as an AB from March 1966 to June 1967. Arvery's final voyage was on the Universe Admiral as an AB Bo's'n and Delegate for Union from October 1967 to September 1968. While on these voyages, Avery would send home 80% of his earnings monthly to his stepmother, who saved most of the money for him, as he would return home. Once married, wages were sent home to his wife. The funds sent home would be used to purchase family land and to build his own home, which he still lives in to this present day.
Using many of the skills honed during his seafaring years, Arvery came home to build a successful career as a master carpenter, plumber and electrician. He has trained, managed, and mentored many young men as a carpenter, and his craftsmanship is evident in the many buildings on Cayman Brac. As a member of the Cayman Islands Seafarers Association in Cayman Brac, Arvery has dedicated his years off the water to assisting with fundraising events, particularly by cooking and baking for the annual picnic, to help ensure that funds are continually raised to support a good quality of life for all seamen. It's for the above reasons that I believe Arvery distinguishes himself and makes him deserving of this award.
