Cardis started his seafaring career at age 15. Like most men of that period he started by going turtling in the Miskito Cays area. He told an interesting story on being on the schooner, Jemsons of when the ship was arriving to Cayman, they met into a storm a short distance away from Cayman. The main mast was taken out and the scuded back towards Swan Island. Cardis later started sailing other vessels and got to be chief engineer.
