Bio

Introduction:
Osbert Burley Ebanks, 10 May 1929 - 22 April 2007, first sailed in 1946 under his own father's recruitment and guidance, as did many young Caymanian boys. The son of Captain Osbert Japhet Ebanks, Captain of the Antaurus, the Armistice and other vessels, Burley as he was commonly known, would go on to travel the world. Burley was one of the most respected navigators and was skilled in the use of the sextant and the compass. He was an unlimited, able-bodied seaman for any waters and would elevate to Chief Mate. He loved the Far East, his favourite port was Hamburg Germany and he was always amazed by the Panama Canal. Burley was shipwrecked multiple times and drifted at sea for nine days once, in addition to experiencing six hurricanes and three typhoons at sea. He was a member of the National Maritime Union of America sailing on at least two vessels through them, the TransOceanic Mariner and the Whitier Victory and would also tenure with the Central Gulf Steamship Corporation. Burley served as a US Merchant Marine transporting goods into and out of Vietnam. He sailed with the West Indian Line under the highly respected Captain Vincent Garvin. It was from this company that he would retire his seafaring career in1982 after 35 years as a seaman.
