Bio
Introduction:
I, Orrett Lenard Connor, nominate my late father Orrett Earnest Connor for the 2021 Nation Heroes Day Awards celebrating our seafaring heritage.
Our father, at a very tender age, and with little opportunity for local employment, sought employment with National Bulk Carriers, in order to support hi young family and his elderly parent.
He sailed on numerous ships, mainly as an Able Bodied Seaman (AB) and an Ordinary Seaman (OS), and relished the opportunity to visit many international ports.
On he return home for his vacations after serving the required period to qualify for a paid return trip home, he would continue in seafaring by using hos canoe (dorey) to fish locally for family and friends.
In the early 1960, our parents decided to immigrate to the USA, and that was when our father ceased working as a seaman.
Two of the many ships that he sailed on were the Harold H Helm and the Kiora.
