Arthur Henry Arch
Born: March 18, 1935
Died: January 20, 2010
Arthur grew up helping with his father and uncles in the
Archs' Boatyard. When he was a teenager he and his Uncle Fossie Arch purchased
the "Lydia E. Wilson" commonly known as the "Wilson". They
used it as a turtling vessel. Arthur sailed on the Wilson on many trips to
Bluefield, Nicaragua.
In 1954 at the age of 19
Arthur shipped out as a 'twiper" on The Perto-Emperor, one of the National
Bulk Carriers. He quickly moved up the ladder to 3rd then 2nd engineer.
Throughout his early career, Arthur worked on a variety of ships, such as the
Universe Commander, Universe Leader and the SS Cavala.
While at sea Arthur enrolled in many correspondent
courses and gained a very rounded education. Over the years he was able to rise
from wiper through the ranks on the ship eventually to Chief Engineer.
In 1972 Arthur returned home
to start "Arch & Godfrey/' a construction company with his father and
younger brother. When construction slowed down in the mid-1970s Arthur returned
to the sea.
He worked on the Hybur Ships
(the Hybur Trader & Hybur Transport) that ran between the Cayman Islands,
Honduras and Florida. His position was 1st Engineer then Chief
Engineer. Somewhere in the early 80's Arthur retired for good from the sea.
His career at sea spanned
some twenty-plus years but his love for the sea lasted a lifetime.
