Introduction:
Malachi Mclurn Anglin has varied and exceptional experience both as one of Cayman's last turtle fishermen, for eight years, as well as 21 years of service as a seafarer in the Merchant Marine where he worked on big ships traveling all over the world and often braving many ferocious storms. Mr. Anglin, better known as Mr. Mac, was just 13 years old in 1956 when he first set sail on one of Cayman's last four turtle schooners, the Tanya, with his Grandfather, Captain Joseph James Anglin, to the Miskito Cays where they would stay for six weeks at a time catching turtles and bringing them back to the 'Turtle Crawl,' until they had a full load of turtles for their schooner. On one occasion Mr. Mac recalls, he and his Grandfather were stranded on one of the Cays without food or water for two days, before being rescued by a shrimp boat. In 1960, Mr. Mac began working as a seafarer for big commercial shipping companies. Once, the propeller of one of the tug-boats he was working on got tangled up in the thick tow line and Mr. Mac volunteered to dive into the rough sea to cut it free with a hacksaw, demonstrating his outstanding commitment. Mr. Mac was a natural choice as one of the very first employees at Mariculture Ltd. when it first began in 1968. His duties included venturing into the North Sound to bring the turtle grass. In between working on the ships, Mr. Mac came back to work at the Centre three more times where he was employed, as he is today, in harvesting some of the turtles in order to make sure that the continuing demands for Cayman's national dish are met but without having to take any turtles from the wild.
